UK Celebrates Knighthood for Sir David Beckham: A Long-Awaited Honor

Sir David Beckham has been awarded a knighthood - Sir David to be bestowed with knighthood; Beckham to receive title 'Sir'

Ahoy there! Our very own Sir David Beckham, the former footy legend from Blighty, has finally been knighted. The 50-year-old couldn't believe his luck when he reckoned he'd ever get such an accolade. "I'm chuffed to the brim, and it's a damn emotional moment for me to share with the fam," he told the PA news agency.

Beckham, now a "Knight Bachelor," received the honor for his services to the UK, as listed in the King's Birthday Honours. This prestigious listing includes all royal honors to be handed out at King Charles III's birthday bash this coming Saturday. Henceforth, you can now call him, Sir David Beckham.

Victoria, his better half, is gonna be labelled as Lady Beckham

As you may know, Beckham has an impressive track record under his belt. One of his most notable achievements was in 1999 when his team, Manchester United, won the Champions League after a nail-biting final against Bayern Munich. In 2003, he was already granted an "Officer of the Order of the British Empire" (OBE).

"Playing for my country and being the captain was the crowning glory of my career and a dream come true from childhood," said Beckham. As for his missus, Victoria Beckham, the fashionista (51), who rose to fame in the '90s with the pop group Spice Girls, is equally well-known.

Victoria showered her hubby with praise on Instagram, saying, "You've always been my knight in shining armor, but now it's official." She also noted his dedication to his homeland, work, passion, and, especially, his family, which has been unwavering. "But above all, I'm proud as punch that you're mine. I love you a truckload, xxxx," she concluded.

Big fan of the Royal Family

David Beckham came close to bagging a knighthood in 2014, but it didn't happen, leading to a wave of headlines about the reasons behind the snub, especially in the tabs. Beckham was rumored to be thoroughly bummed out.

The 50-year-old, who's also a model, entrepreneur, and football club owner, has always been a huge admirer of the Royals. After the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, the former footballer even stood in line for hours to pay his respects to the late monarch lying in state at Westminster Hall.

Honors are bestowed upon individuals on the recommendation of the government. This year, an impressive 1,215 people are in the running for the royal honors on King Charles III's birthday. Usually, a batch of awards is also handed out at New Year's. The investiture ceremony, where the knighthood is officially bestowed, normally takes place months later by a member of the Royal Family at one of their residences.

The knighthood is the most famous award, but it's not the only level. A "Knight Bachelor" is not a member of an order, unlike a "Knight Commander." There are also many orders below knighthood.

Also receiving a "gong," as the awards given out twice a year are playfully referred to, are the 18-year-old Darts Champion Luke Littler and his rival, the world number one Luke Humphries (30). They will now be known as "Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire" (MBE) for their services to darts.
