More than two decades since unleashing her provocative anthem "Dirrty," Christina Aguilera proudly rides the wave of controversy. At a recent gathering in Santa Monica, the 44-year-old vocal powerhouse shared her feelings on the song that kicked up a storm of resistance in 2002.

"Remember when I dropped the 'Stripped' album and earned some hefty flak for my chart-topping number 'Dirrty'?" Aguilera playfully bantered with the US magazine "People." For her, "Dirrty" represented more than a racy tune - it symbolized her articulation of self-empowerment. "It felt incredibly empowering to reclaim my body and express myself in the manner I desired," she elucidated. The track was her conscious revolt against the "candy-coated pop bubblegum doll" identity she yearned to move away from.

Falling on September 3, 2002, the Redman-featured tack marked a dramatic transformation for the artist who'd previously churned out albums under label constraints. "The label was hell-bent on peddling an innocent, almost saccharine image that simply wasn't me," Aguilera had been vocal about earlier. She dreamt of shedding this "infuriating and phony facade."

Embracing the Storm

Interestingly, the more pegs Aguilera got for her uniquely designed outfit, the more she reveled in it. "Let's face it, the more flak I copped for flaunting it, the more fun it became," she admitted to "People" in 2021. Her iconic chaps from the music video remain in her keepsakes box, a memento of her defiant spirit.

The scathing public response also sparked some introspection in Aguilera, unearthing societal double standards. "It was intriguing to hear the reasons why people believed I shouldn't do it, why I didn't own the right to speak my truth for my body," she mused at the Santa Monica event.

Shaping the Future

Aguilera's experiences alike mold her parenting style today. With her ex-husband Jordan Bratman, she shares a 16-year-old son, Max Liron, and with her partner Matt Rutler, a 10-year-old princess, Summer Rain. "Aging gracefully, I've come to understand the importance of fostering a curious, uncensored, self-aware environment for my kids," she shared.

Two decades down the line, Aguilera looks back on her audacious decision with pride. Since 2022, she's been a crusader for sexual health education, co-founding Playground. Her message to the world is clear: "I've reached a stage where I just don't care about your opinion. I won't dance to your tune. Your opinions about me? Not my problem."

Decades might have shuffled the pop-culture landscape, but Christina Aguilera's defiance continues to inspire. Her audacious "Dirrty" continues to resonate as an anthem of self-expression, self-assertion, and feminism.
