Singer Preta Gil's family unveils a statue of him in his family tomb in Rio

Preta Gil, the beloved Brazilian singer and actress, received an extraordinary farewell on the last day of July. At the age of 50, Gil passed away in New York after a courageous battle with cancer of the intestine.

Following her cremation on July 25, over 100 cards filled with loving messages from family and friends were deposited with her ashes. A personalised bust, crafted by RVF America, was her permanent tribute at the Columbarium of the Rio de Janeiro Penitentiary Cemetery.

The bust, sculpted to bear the artist's features, was installed in a niche that now also houses a photo of Preta Gil. The installation was attended by Bela Gil, Carolina Dieckmann, Regina Casé, Juliana Alves, Renée Silva, Lore Improta, Pai Calixto, Clara Buarque, and Sol de Maria, who all left tributes.

During her battle, Preta Gil was undergoing experimental treatment for her cancer in the United States. Despite the challenges, she remained determined and resilient, inspiring many with her strength.

In a touching gesture, a lipstick left by her family was also deposited with her ashes, serving as a symbol of her vibrant and colourful spirit.
