Singer Perrie Edwards from Little Mix addressed publicly her past relationship with Zayn Malik, labeling it as "toxic."
In a candid conversation on the "We Need to Talk" podcast, released on August 19, 2025, Little Mix member Perrie Edwards discussed her relationship with former One Direction band member Zayn Malik.
Edwards, who met Malik when both were contestants on The X Factor at the age of 17, dated him from 2011 to 2015. The pair got engaged in 2013.
Throughout their relationship, Edwards found it difficult to discuss their personal life due to the public's expectations. "I felt young when I was engaged to Zayn," she admitted. "The public scrutiny was intense, and it was hard to navigate our relationship in the limelight."
The relationship was not without its challenges. Edwards revealed that she experienced emotions she considered toxic during their time together. However, she also considers Malik to be her first true love.
Rumours swirled that the Little Mix song "Shout Out To My Ex" was about Malik. Edwards never discussed the split in interviews, but she did confirm that after the breakup, she initially thought she never wanted to go through heartbreak again.
Malik, too, has spoken about their relationship. He denied ending the relationship via text and admitted that he was in a relationship and engaged from the age of 17 to 21. "I didn't know anything about anything at that point," he said.
Fast forward to the present, and Edwards is currently engaged to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and they share a child. When Malik reached out to her after she had been with Alex for around two years, Edwards felt uncomfortable.
