"Chabadabada": The Iconic Melody that Sparked Memories

Hear that catchy tune? It's none other than the iconic "Chabadabada" from Claude Lelouch's film "A Man and a Woman". And although the original refrain is just "daba daba da", it's the French way of jumbling words that's etched this earworm in our collective memory.

On Wednesday, Lelouch paid tribute to the woman behind the melody on Instagram. "Nicole," he wrote, "wasn't just a singer—she was a muse, a friend, a comrade."

From politics to music, "Chabadabada" has made its mark. In France, an electoral list refers to a gender-balanced list, a nod to the film's title "A Man, a Woman". Mireille Mathieu, too, took a turn at singing the popular tune.

With around 20 albums to her name, Nicole shone brightest in the 70s with hits like "Parlez-moi de lui" and "Téléphone-moi". From her humble beginnings as a 17-year-old dancer at the Ballet of the Comédie-Française, she ventured into the worlds of pantomime with Marcel Marceau and jazz music in the USA. At one point, she even joined the ensemble of the French-American artist Josephine Baker.

Despite retiring, Nicole continued to charm audiences on stage, even starring in a Sacha Guitry comedy in 2019. As she approached her 83rd birthday, she told AFP, "I'm having a blast! At my age, I love challenges."
