Deadly House Fire Claims Life of 1990s Sensation Jill Sobule

In a heartbreaking turn of events, acclaimed singer-songwriter Jill Sobule, best known for her 90s hits "I Kissed a Girl" and "Supermodel", perished in a devastating house fire on May 2, 2025. The tragedy unfolded in the quiet suburbs of Woodbury, Minnesota.

First responders were called to a blazing residence on Pinehurst Road around 5:30 a.m., where they found the house completely engulfed. One occupant managed to escape, but sadly, Sobule, aged 66, could not be found initially. According to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner, her official cause of death is yet to be announced.

Sobule, a Denver native, kickstarted her extensive musical career in the 1990s with her debut album "Things Here are Different". Her song "I Kissed a Girl", from her self-titled 1995 album, became the first openly LGBTQ-themed song to chart on the Billboard Top 20, while "Supermodel" gained popularity due to its inclusion in the 1995 film "Clueless".

Her musical journey continued with numerous albums, tackling diverse issues such as the death penalty, disordered eating, and LGBTQ+ issues. She shared stages with musical giants like Neil Young, Cyndi Lauper, and Tom Morello throughout her career. Despite a prolonged hiatus after releasing her seventh studio album "California Years" in 2009, Sobule returned to the music scene with her final album, "Nostalgia Kills", in 2018.

As the investigation into the fire's cause continues, the authorities have not reported any suspicious activity. Standard forensic analysis is underway to determine the cause of the fire. Sobule's upcoming Minneapolis concert (June 11) and planned memorials in Denver serve as a poignant reminder of her active career at the time of her untimely demise.

In a statement, John Porter, Sobule's manager, hailed her as "a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture". He expressed hope that her "music, memory, and legacy continue to live on and inspire others".

Sobule leaves behind her brother, sister-in-law, nephews, cousins, and a vast network of friends. Further details about a formal memorial celebrating her life and legacy will be announced later this year.
