Dawn Robinson, once a leading lady in the iconic girl group En Vogue, known for hit tracks like "Free Your Mind" and "Don't Let Go," is now living a life far from the glitz and glamour. Here's her heartbreaking story.
The '90s marked the rise of powerhouse girl groups such as TLC, All Saints, Destiny's Child, the Spice Girls, and of course, En Vogue. Formed by singers Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, Terry Ellis, and Dawn Robinson, En Vogue made a significant impact, dominating the US charts from the get-go.
Their second album, "Funky Divas," with the anthemic hit "Free Your Mind," catapulted them to fame in 1992. They continued with hit tracks like "Don't Let Go (Love)" and "Whatta Man" alongside fellow all-female group Salt 'n' Pepa.
En Vogue's success story was incredible, with numerous award wins, seven Grammy nominations, and the sale of over 20 million records, securing their place among the most successful girl groups ever.
Three Years Inside a Car
Despite the band's continuing success, Robinson chose to leave En Vogue in the mid-'90s, only to return several times post-millennium before retiring around 2011.
Today, the 58-year-old singer has made headlines after uploading a YouTube video exposing her bleak living situation – she's been homeless for approximately three years and resides in her car.
Initially sharing a home with her parents in Las Vegas, things didn't work out in the long run. A subsequent apartment offered by her manager was too cramped, and eight months spent in a hotel left Robinson with the realization that "This isn't acceptable."
With resolve, Robinson decided to embrace car living. "I felt free," she shares. "It felt like I was on a camping trip. It just felt right."
Coping with Homelessness
The initial nights were "terrifying," admits Robinson, but she soon adapted, learning vital skills like how to secure her car windows and who to confide in. "As a woman, you need to be cautious about divulging that you're alone," she adds, chuckling. "And I'm not going to broadcast that I'm a celebrity anyway!"
A Veteran "Funky Diva," Yet Far from Luxurious
Robinson has no regrets about her decision. "Many celebrities have lived in their cars," she rhetorically declares, adding wittily, "Just so you know, I'm a member of a gym, and I shower there. I'm a 'Funky Diva,' but not literally."
Although she prefers the comfort of an apartment, Robinson is proud of the journey she's undertaken. "I've truly accomplished so much out here," she beams.
Could Robinson's time spent on the streets soon give way to the limelight once more? Just days ago, the current En Vogue lineup, including the other three original members, graced the NBA All-Star Game halftime show. With more live shows planned, there's a chance Dawn Robinson might step back onto the stage.
Based on ntv.de and vpr sources.
- Dawn Robinson, known for her role in the pop music group En Vogue and hit tracks like "Free Your Mind" and "Don't Let Go," has recently been living a stark contrast to her former life of entertainment, residing in her car for the past three years.
- In a twisted turn of events, Robinson, who was once part of the quartet that dominated the US charts and has sold over 20 million records, is now mastering the art of surviving in her vehicle, a sharp contrast to the luxurious life of a pop music icon.
- With En Vogue back in the limelight, performing at the NBA All-Star Game halftime show and planning more live shows, there is a possibility that Robinson, the former 'Funky Diva,' might be lured back to the stage, giving a complete revamp to her current vogue of car living.
