Singapore's dominant political party claims another sweeping victory in nationwide elections, lengthening their uninterrupted reign since 1959.

Singapore's ruling party, the People's Action Party (PAP), has once again dominated the general elections, strengthening Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's leadership and the party's position.

In a landslide victory, the PAP seized 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats, including key battleground constituencies like Jalan Kayu and West Coast-Jurong West GRC. This win cements the PAP's ironclad control of the legislature.

Prior to the declaration of the results, supporters of the PAP, a political mainstay since 1959, filled stadiums with cheers and flag-waving. PM Wong herself stated that the outcome would put Singapore in a better position to navigate a tumultuous world.

Wong, a U.S.-educated economist and finance minister who ascended to the role of prime minister last year, expressed gratitude for the solid mandate given to the PAP. She admitted that voters desired more alternative voices in government, but stressed that a robust PAP team is essential to confront the challenges ahead.

The new prime minister will now guide trade-reliant Singapore through economic uncertainty generated by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff hikes. The American administration's announcement on tariffs led the Singaporean government to lower its trade forecast and predict possible recession.

While the PAP is perceived as a symbol of stability and prosperity, the high cost of living in one of the world's costliest cities has caused growing dissatisfaction, particularly among younger voters.

During the past decade, the PAP has experienced a decline in support, with its share of the popular vote dropping to a near-record low of 61% in the 2020 elections, down from nearly 70% in 2015 [1][3]. In response, Wong has sought to rejuvenate support for the PAP by introducing 32 new candidates and promising to engage with younger voters through social media.

However, the opposition argues that a greater presence in parliament would foster a more balanced political system and improved accountability. Their efforts have often been hampered by resource limitations and fractured support.

Extra Insights

The 2025 Singapore General Elections marked a significant reversal in the PAP's declining popularity, with the party garnering 65.6% of the popular vote, a notable increase from the 2020 elections' near-record low of 61%.

Despite the PAP's parliamentary dominance, the Workers’ Party managed to retain its 10 seats and secured two additional Non-constituency MP seats. The opposition's continued presence indicates that voters are expressing a desire for more alternative voices in government.

Prime Minister Wong now faces mounting economic challenges, including trade disruptions and a revised growth forecast warning of possible recession. Geopolitical risks also loom as the PAP aims to maintain stability amid global uncertainty.
