Singapore festival organizers unaware of Zubeen Garg's yacht visit prior to his death
Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, a beloved figure in the music industry of Northeast India, passed away on Friday in Singapore. The news of his untimely demise has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond.
According to reports, Zubeen Garg died allegedly after suffering breathing issues during scuba diving. His manager was the one who called with the tragic news. The singer was accompanied by his wife Nilakshi in Singapore before the accident.
The organisers of the North East India Festival, where Zubeen Garg was scheduled to perform and interact with people, were engaged in a business meeting with senior Singaporean industrialists and policymakers at the Shangri-La Hotel when they received the heartbreaking news. They immediately rushed to the Singapore General Hospital where Zubeen Garg was taken after the accident.
The organisers shared the news of Zubeen Garg's death with profound grief, and in light of the tragic event, have decided to cancel the North East India Festival.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is in constant contact with India's High Commissioner to Singapore to ensure Zubeen Garg's mortal remains are brought home. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also offered his condolences, expressing his shock and grief over the loss.
In a moving tribute, PM Modi wrote an X post, "Saddened by the passing away of popular singer Zubeen Garg. His music was loved by many. My thoughts are with his family and fans in this sad hour. May Zubeen's soul rest in peace."
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma described Zubeen Garg as one of Assam's favourite sons and expressed his deep grief over the untimely demise.
It is reported that a few members of the local Assamese community took Zubeen Garg on a yacht visit, which was unknown to the organisers before the tragic accident. The organisers are working closely with the High Commission to complete necessary procedures.
Zubeen Garg had arrived in Singapore just the day before his demise and was scheduled to meet and perform at the North East India Festival on September 20, 2025. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved his music.
The loss of Zubeen Garg is a significant one for the music industry and the people of Northeast India. His music and talent will continue to live on, and his memory will be cherished for years to come.
