Meet Nicola Olyslagers (née McDermott), the outspoken Christian athlete who brought home a silver medal in the high jump for Australia at the swanky Paris Olympics, ranking alongside her Tokyo 2021 triumph.
The Ukrainian record holder, Yaroslava Mahuchich, nabbed the gold. Both ladies cleared 1.98m in a fierce competition, but Olyslagers needed three attempts to hop over the 2.00m barrier.
Eleanor Patterson from Australia and Iryna Geraschenko from Ukraine secured the bronze medals by leaping 1.95 metres each.
Olyslagers, a fervent believer, kudos'd God following her victory on her Instagram channel. Her body bears several biblical quotes as tattoos, and she scribbles a biblical reference on her wrist during each competition - this time it was 1 John 4:18.
"Hopping is like worshipping in a church. My worship may not be in singing, but it's in my feet jumping over the bar," she conveyed to ABC Sport after her glorious moment.
She keeps her little book of devotion, which she calls "For His Glory," and evaluates all her jumps in it, along with words, pictures, and Bible verses from training and contests.
At every competition, she converses with God at the climax of her approach to the jump, taking a deep breath and clenching her fists.
The term "revival" can be found in small print on her Olympic silver medal-winning shoes, as she shares, "my heart and vision for sport is a revival."
"I believe that God can transform anything in sports. I've seen so many athletes getting burned out easily, and their identity is rooted in sports. A revival in sports means seeing people liberated and freed from all that, experiencing God's movements in unexpected ways," Olyslagers believes.
She recalled, "A few years back, God revived me; he rekindled my love for the sport, rekindled my passion, and strengthened my purpose."
"When I jump, every time I look at that word and think, 'All right, I'll put a bit more effort into this training session'," added Olyslagers.
According to her website, her contentment once stemmed from performance, but that changed when she met Jesus. Since then, she wishes to share her experience with all and "the high jump offers a platform to reveal the relentless love of the King."
Olyslagers, with other Christian athletes, has co-founded the ministry Everlasting... (Note: No specific information on the Everlasting Crowns ministry could be found; however, groups like the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) focus on combining faith and sports.)
...ministry. She has conducted Bible studies and meetings across the globe. Their mission is to "see fellow athletes transformed by Jesus's perfect love, planted in churches, and discipled to be a blessing to every place they go."
"Our goal is to gather sportspeople worldwide, forming a network of believers. Our hope is that they rise up, not only in faith but with an eternal perspective," they communicate.
In an Instagram video featuring British hurdler Cindy Sember, Olyslagers can be seen praising God together with other athletes in the Olympic Village.
