Holiday Cheer for Seniors: The 'Silbernetz' Hotline Stands by Your Side

Skip the holiday blues and loneliness as the 'Silbernetz', a dedicated hotline for senior citizens, is always at your service this festive season. From the 24th of December until the commencement of the New Year, 'Silbernetz' will be operational round-the-clock across Germany, as stated by a representative from the Berlin association.

Last year, the phone rang a whopping 5,628 times during this specific period, showcasing the growing need and importance of this service. Despite operating every day, the hotline is not available continuously around the clock.

Elke Schilling, the brainchild behind 'Silbernetz', shared her thoughts on the initiative's development. "It brings both joy and melancholy to witness 'Silbernetz' growing, the urgency it holds in catering to the distinctive needs of our aging population," she said. The number of calls has increased by around 20% each year, highlighting the critical importance of such services.

Most callers to 'Silbernetz' merely wish to share their thoughts and reminisce (84%), with loneliness and physical complaints accounting for 58% and 68% of conversational topics, respectively. During the dark and chilly season, there tends to be an uptick in calls to the telephone hotline, with Sundays recording the highest number of contacts.

As of mid-December, 'Silbernetz' has fielded a staggering 148,000 calls this year, averaging approximately 1,900 calls per week. Two-tenths of callers are male, whereas the remaining eight-tenths are female. Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Baden-Württemberg are major hotspots for 'Silbernetz' usage.
