Hamburg: Shoplifting and Pickpocketing on the Rise
In the bustling streets of Hamburg, pocket-pickers and shoplifters have been busy this year. Compared to 2022, the number of shoplifting incidents has skyrocketed by 46%, with 15,567 cases registered from January to September. Pickpocketing has witnessed a similar surge, increasing by a staggering 37% to reach a total of 10,387 incidents in the same period. These alarming figures were revealed in a response from the Hamburg Senate to a query posed by the CDU parliamentary group.
The criminal activities don't end there. In the first nine months of this year, 10,261 thefts from cars and 2,466 burglaries from homes were also recorded. Although the number of bicycle thefts has slightly decreased, the total tally of stolen bikes still reached 10,800 by the end of September.
When it comes to solving these crimes, shoplifting has a clear advantage. Nearly 90% of shoplifting cases are resolved, often with the offender caught in the act. However, clearance rates for other types of theft are significantly lower, ranging from 3.4% for car break-ins to 9.1% for home burglaries.
Dennis Thering, the CDU parliamentary group's chairman, believes the escalating criminality demands immediate action. He advocates for increasing the strength of the police and public prosecutor’s office to expedite proceedings and bring perpetrators to justice. Thering asserts, "Clear-up rates of just 3.4% for car break-ins and 8% for house thefts are unacceptable and a slap in the face for victims".
While Hamburg is grappling with rising thefts, other cities are taking proactive measures to combat shoplifting and pickpocketing. For instance, in Berlin, dm drugstores have adopted new security measures, such as securing premium cosmetic products in locked cabinets and requiring customer assistance to access them. Major retailers in the United States, including Target and pharmacy chains like CVS and Walgreens, are also implementing similar measures, such as using locked displays and mobile app-based unlocking systems. In a broader context, combating cybercrime and internet fraud has also gained significant importance, with law enforcement agencies like the EFCC in Nigeria dedicating resources to the fight.
As Hamburg confronts the implications of escalating thefts, it might follow suit and consider adopting innovative security measures to safeguard its citizens.
