Hiccups Galore in Expansion of Pforzheim's Detention Facility
Held-up Extension of Detention Facility for Deportation Processes - Significant Slowdown in the Enlargement of the Detention Facility for Immigrants
Let's get real here, folks. The expansion of the detention facility in Pforzheim has hit a snag—big time! The long-anticipated expansion to accommodate 80 detainees ain't happening this year, with some predictions pointing towards spring 2027. Why, you ask? Well, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice cites unforeseen challenges during planning and construction as the main cause.
Work's been ongoing at the facility, even while it's still up and running. To make matters worse, planning firms have delivered subpar performance, causing further delays—as if we needed more! By fall of this year, you'd think we'd have at least 68 detention spots, but the Ministry of Finance remains optimistic.
Unfortunately, the renovation, which should've been a done deal by now, has been repeatedly pushed back. The detention center opened its doors in 2016 with 36 spots and expanded to 51 mid-2019. According to the Ministry of Finance, the renovation's projected cost is now over 13 million euros, up from the original 9 million budget.
The occupancy rate's high, and with increased deportations in the southwest, it's higher than last year. The Ministry of Justice reports daily accommodations of 45 people during May, which is full capacity when considering reservations. Since January, the facility's been consistently operating at max capacity. It's unclear whether any delays in deportations were due to space constraints.
As of April 30, approximately 23,700 people in Baden-Württemberg could potentially be deported. However, their deportation's currently suspended due to various reasons, such as countries like Syria being off-limits for deportations.
By May 31, about 1,580 people were deported from the southwest. In comparison, around 1,130 people had been deported by the same date last year.
