Significant Initiative: Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) unveils substantial plan to decrease commute duration on renowned Al Wasl Road, Dubai

Get ready for a smoother, faster, and more enjoyable ride along Dubai's iconic Al Wasl Road! The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a comprehensive revamp of this bustling artery, as part of a 15-kilometer corridor enhancement project spanning from Umm Suqeim Street to 2nd December Street.

The overhaul is a cornerstone in RTA's mission to modernize and expand Dubai's road network, targeting Umm Suqeim and Al Safa Streets, amongst others, to alleviate traffic, boost road capacity, and elevate urban aesthetics. Here's what you need to know about the exciting changes coming to Al Wasl Road.

Al Wasl Makeover Highlights

  • Al Wasl Road will be expanded from two lanes to three in each direction, ensuring a smoother flow of traffic.
  • Six key intersections will receive an upgrade, including Al Thanya, Al Manara, Umm Al Sheif, Umm Amara, Al Orouba, and Al Safa Streets.
  • Five traffic tunnels totaling an impressive 3,850 meters will be constructed, helping to significantly cut down travel times and ease congestion.

The Key Intersections Transformation

  • At Al Manara Street, a three-lane unidirectional tunnel will be built with a total capacity of 4,500 vehicles per hour, branching into two routes.
  • A two-lane tunnel at Umm Al Sheif Street will stretch 750 meters, supporting 3,200 vehicles per hour from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Street.
  • A dual-direction tunnel at Umm Amara Street will cover 700 meters and handle an impressive 6,400 vehicles per hour.
  • Al Orouba Street will feature a 625-meter unidirectional tunnel toward Jumeirah Street, capable of serving 1,400 vehicles per hour.
  • At Al Safa Street, a tunnel will stretch 750 meters with two lanes in each direction, accommodating a whopping 6,400 vehicles per hour.

Changes at the Al Satwa Roundabout and Jumeirah Street

The plan also includes converting the Al Satwa roundabout into a signalized intersection and implementing surface-level improvements at five intersections along Jumeirah Street. These improvements will optimize traffic flow and enhance the traffic signal control system.

Timeline and Rollout of Other Projects

The Al Wasl Road initiative is part of a broader infrastructure development plan that encompasses significant upgrades to Umm Suqeim Street. The street is being enhanced from Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road, increasing its capacity from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour. Once completed, travel time along this corridor is expected to drop from 20 minutes to a mere 6 minutes.

Another important project, the upgrade to Al Qudra Road, is also underway, from Al Khail Road to Emirates Road, featuring an 800-meter tunnel at Al Barsha South with four lanes in each direction and a signalized intersection, amongst other improvements.

The Impact on Three Million Residents

The Al Wasl Road project, along with related upgrades, is designed to support more than three million residents across multiple districts. The improvements will enhance access to key destinations such as beaches, luxury hotels, residential communities, and major commercial zones, fostering a more livable, sustainable, and beautiful cityscape.
