Significant findings from the New Jersey election: Trump's influence remains prominent, and evidence of heightened Democratic passion is apparent.

Going for Gold in the Garden State

Primaries in New Jersey have turned into a high-stakes festival, and this year is no exception. The governor's race is heating up, with President Donald Trump playing a significant role. Here are five key takeaways from the latest primaries:

Trump's Winning Streak Continues

Republicans have faced some rough times in off-year elections, and Trump isn't immune. However, his chosen candidate, Jack Ciattarelli, easily clinched the GOP nomination for the governor's race.

Trump was all-in for Ciattarelli, making an enthusiastic endorsement via social media. "Jack Ciattarelli is a WINNER, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement - HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, ELECT JACK CIATTARELLI!" he wrote.

Ciattarelli has had his sights set on the governorship since losing to term-limited Democrat Phil Murphy by a hair in 2021. This endorsement could be the tipping point he's been waiting for.

Bill Spadea, another Republican contender, took a hit from Trump's endorsement, having vowed to wholeheartedly back the president's agenda. Spadea claimed voters should feel free to disregard Trump's advice, stating, "I've disagreed with him in the past. It's ok for you to disagree with him now."

Trump brushed off the competition during a tele-rally, remarking, "Other people are going around saying I endorsed them. That's not true."

Politics as Usual? Not So Fast!

While local issues like high property taxes and cost of living are expected to dominate discussions in the upcoming election, Trump couldn't be overlooked.

On the Republican side, candidates voiced their allegiance to the president. Ciattarelli, with Trump's endorsement, vowed to oppose New Jersey's sanctuary city status and end lawsuits against the Trump administration.

Democrats, too, were eager to make Trump a key part of their campaign strategy. Representative Mikie Sherrill, who secured the Democratic nomination, unleashed an array of ads featuring pickup trucks waving giant Trump flags and warning, "Trump's coming for New Jersey with Trump-endorsed Republican Jack Ciattarelli."

A Lesson in Forgiveness

Ciattarelli was once a harsh critic of Trump, labeling him an "embarrassment" and a "charlatan." However, in 2021, Ciattarelli brushed past his past criticisms and extended an olive branch to Trump, describing his endorsement as "a really big deal."

Trump, like Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and many others, seems to have forgiven the past insults. Campaigning for Ciattarelli, Trumpskyrocketed Ciattarelli's chances, stating, "After getting to know and understand MAGA, [Ciattarelli] has gone ALL IN, and is now 100% (PLUS!)."

A Shifting Political Landscape

New Jersey's historical blue sentiment began to waver in the 2021 presidential elections, as Trump managed to close the gap with Kamala Harris, losing by only six points – a significant decrease from the 16-point margin President Biden enjoyed.

Trump also made strong gains in traditionally Democrat strongholds like Passaic County, carrying the city of Passaic and making impressive increases in Paterson, a majority Latino and Muslim community. The upcoming election could serve as a critical test for Democrats, determining their ability to reclaim Latino support in both the state and nationally.

Democrats Rally Behind Sherrill

In a crowded Democratic field, Mikie Sherrill emerged victorious. Prevented from voting in the primary due to medical complications, Sherrill leaned heavily on her military service, legal background, and family life to secure the nomination.

The Democratic base is eager to counteract Trump's influence, viewing the general election as an opportunity to vent their discontent with his second-term agenda. Enthusiasm seemed high during early voting, with massive Democratic turnout significantly surpassing that of the Republicans.
