Significant decline in forest fires observed in Yakutia region
As of late August 2025, Yakutia (Republic of Sakha) continues to battle multiple ongoing forest fires, with a high fire hazard class declared in several districts.
Current Status
There are currently 7 active forest fires in various districts such as Lena, Vilyuysky, Kobyaysky, Mirninsky, and Olekminsky, affecting more than 1,100 hectares in total. The fires have significantly decreased compared to the same period in 2024, when there were 68 fires affecting over 357,000 hectares. Approximately more than 480 people and four pieces of equipment are involved in firefighting efforts.
Cause
The primary causes of these wildfires include dry conditions and strong winds, which sustain and spread the fires rapidly across Siberia including Yakutia and nearby regions like Irkutsk. Climate change is recognized as a major underlying factor, as it has increased both the size and frequency of wildfires in the boreal forests of this region, contributing to more severe fire seasons in recent years.
Response
In response, Russia has mobilized extensive resources, with over 1,100 personnel, dozens of equipment units, and aircraft engaged in fire suppression across the country, including Yakutia. A special fire protection regime remains in effect in parts of Yakutia to manage the emergency.
Additional Measures
A local emergency regime has been imposed in the city of Yakutsk, and an emergency regime has been declared in Verkhnekolymsky, Verkhneviluysky, Ust-Maysky, Srednekolymsky, Tomponsky, and Olekminsky districts within Yakutia. The special fire prevention regime has been in effect in Yakutia since June 26.
Recent Developments
In the last 24 hours, 11 new forest fires covering 1190 hectares were discovered. However, in the same period, 46 forest fires covering 203 thousand hectares were extinguished. The Republic of Yakutia is experiencing a forest fire between Khandyga and Tepliy Klyuch.
