Fresh Take:

🗓️ June 27, 2025 – Siemens Keen on Vietnam's North-South High-Speed Railway

German tech behemoth Siemens is ready to roll into Vietnam, expressing keen interest in constructing the country's coveted North-South high-speed railway. This announcement was revealed during a meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Tianjin, China.

Boasting a diverse portfolio in industry, infrastructure, transportation, and healthcare, Siemens reported a whopping €75.9 billion (US$89 billion) in revenues last year and has been a staple in Vietnam since 1993, with offices in Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and a manufacturing facility in Binh Duong Province.

Welcoming Siemens with open arms, Prime Minister Chinh particularly acknowledged the company's interest in the North-South high-speed rail project, a mammoth 1,541-km undertaking expected to cost US$67 billion and connect Hanoi with Ho Chi Minh City, passing through 20 provinces and cities. Approved by the Vietnamese parliament in November 2024, several companies, both foreign and domestic, have shown interest, including VinSpeed and automaker Thaco.

Parliament Approves North-South High-speed Railway Steaming Ahead

September 26, 2024 – It's full steam ahead for Vietnam as its North-South High-Speed Railway construction received a thumbs up from the parliament. The 30-hour long railway journey from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City is set to be halved, making travel a breeze and raising Vietnam's reputation among potential foreign investors.

Key for restructuring transport in the country and a stepping stone for Vietnam's leap to growth, the Minister of Transport highlighted the necessity for quicker alternatives on the north-south corridor. The 1,500-km project is expected to run from Lang Son in the north and end in Ca Mau, connecting the two most urbanized areas in the country.

Recently, Vietnam's Commission for the State Management Capital (CMSC) extended an invite to the Chinese contractor, China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), to build this mega project, putting confidence in CSCEC's long-standing involvement in other Vietnam projects.
