Sidney Crosby Expresses Doubts About Alex Ovechkin Retiring Anytime Soon
A surprise exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs didn't seem to dim Alexander Ovechkin's spirit. Known as the Great 8, he's the NHL's all-time goal-scoring leader, but is retirement on the horizon?
Not according to his long-time rival, Sidney Crosby. After a chat during the IIHF World Hockey Championship in Sweden and Denmark, Crosby shared his thoughts on Ovechkin's future. "He's playing unbelievable even at his age. What he's able to do is pretty incredible, so if he feels good, I'm sure he'll keep going," Crosby stated[2].
Ovechkin has one more year left on his current contract, which he previously expressed he wouldn't retire before[1]. Given his outstanding performance in the 2024-25 season, where he tied for third in the NHL with 44 goals in just 65 games[1], it's hard to believe he's ready to call it quits. Washington Capitals coach Spencer Carbery expects Ovechkin to return for the 2025-26 season, endorsing his continued passion and strong performance[1][3].
Disappointed about their early exit, Ovechkin and the Capitals might have felt a twinge of regret, but Crosby acknowledges the accomplishments of the season[4]. "That's a pretty rare thing to experience," Crosby said. So, as long as Ovechkin is feeling great and maintaining his stellar performance, expect him to lace 'em up and keep skating well beyond the 2025-26 season, even though his contract will run out then. After all, retirement might just be a far-off blur in the Great 8's rearview mirror.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs exit didn't deter Alexander Ovechkin's passion for hockey, as he is still playing at an exceptional level in the NHL, making it difficult to contemplate retirement. In light of his impressive 2024-25 season performance, where he tied for third in the NHL with 44 goals, retirement seems distant for the Great 8, as he showcases no signs of slowing down even after his contract ends in 2026.
