Sidewalk Collapse Near San Esteban de Gormaz Bridge Raises Traffic Concerns
A section of the sidewalk near the San Esteban de Gormaz bridge in Soria has collapsed for the third time this year. The incident occurred on Tuesday around noon, affecting the retaining wall of gabions. The mayor has blamed the issue on heavy traffic and called for an emergency alternative bridge.
The collapse happened in the area where heavy trucks take a sharp curve to join the N-110, causing part of the sidewalk to fall. This is not the first time this has occurred; the gabions of the retaining walls were previously repaired by the local government after a similar incident in July 2022. The mayor has stated that the bridge is not designed to handle the current traffic volume and weight, and has called for a review of the works carried out by the town hall and the company that repaired the sidewalks. The Town Hall has requested the Ministry of Transport to build an emergency alternative bridge and design a new definitive structure. The sub-delegate of the Government, Miguel Latorre, clarified that the collapse occurred on a part of the sidewalk, not directly on the bridge.
The collapse of the sidewalk near the San Esteban de Gormaz bridge has raised concerns about the bridge's ability to handle current traffic. The Town Hall has requested emergency measures, and the mayor has called for a review of the works carried out and the involvement of the repair company. The Ministry of Transport is expected to address the issue and provide a solution.
