General Practitioners Embrace Potential for Telephone Sick Notes

Markus Beier, head of the General Practitioners' Association in Germany, has expressed support for the idea of obtaining sick notes over the phone in the future. This could be particularly beneficial during periods of high illness rates, such as the current wave of colds and coronavirus. The Federal Joint Committee is considering an amendment to guidelines that could allow for incapacity for work to be established without a practice visit under certain conditions, although employers have raised concerns about potential impacts on industrial peace.

Digital Sick Notes: Pros and Cons

While it may not yet be permanent, the prospect of telephone sick notes has its merits. On one hand, digital means can increase convenience for patients and streamline the process, benefiting both patients and doctors. On the other hand, there are concerns about the accuracy and legitimacy of sick notes issued remotely, as well as security and privacy concerns related to the transmission of medical information.

Currently, in Germany, sick notes can be issued by doctors through phone or video calls, as well as in-person consultations. While there are concerns about the accuracy and legitimacy of remote consultations, the existing digital infrastructure in Germany supports the issuance of sick notes through various communication channels.

Germany's Digital Health System

The current system in Germany allows for the electronic transmission of sick notes from the doctor's office to the health insurance provider and employer, which is already a digital process. Although there is no specific proposal to make obtaining a sick note by phone permanent, the existing digital infrastructure supports the issuance of sick notes through various communication channels.

As the world continues to move towards digitalization, the prospect of telephone sick notes is likely to be a topic of ongoing discussion. While there are concerns about accuracy, security, and patient-doctor interaction, the convenience and efficiency benefits of digital solutions are hard to ignore. Ultimately, the best solution will likely be a balance between the two, taking into account the unique needs and circumstances of patients and doctors alike.
