Sicilian waters welcome a flotilla composed of 42 vessels, hailing from Spain, Italy, and the Maghreb, sets sail for Gaza.
The Italian fleet, which is a part of the Global Sumud Flotilla coalition, faced delays and setbacks before resuming its journey on Friday morning. The fleet, composed of activists, artists, and other personalities, including Greta Thunberg and Ada Colau, was originally scheduled to set sail on September 4 but faced logistical problems, adverse weather conditions, and other setbacks.
The fleet, which departed from Tunisia last Sunday, comprises vessels from North Africa and Spain. One of the ships, the "Família Madeira", was subjected to a drone attack last week, while docked in the port of Sidi Bou Said, near Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. The attack resulted in a fire, but fortunately, no one on board was harmed. The second video released by the flotilla shows that two activists, including Miguel Duarte, narrowly avoided being hit by the drone attack. Duarte stated, "We could have been killed."
Mariana Mortágua, the coordinator of the Left Bloc, and actress Sofia Aparição were on the "Família Madeira" ship at the time of the drone attack, but they were not on the vessel at that moment. The coalition aims to deliver food and humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, aiming to break the Israeli blockade.
The Italian politicians on board the flotilla include four Italian deputies, among them the Green Party MEP Benedetta Scuderi. They joined to show political solidarity and protest the European response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Benedetta Scuderi and Annalisa Corrado are MEPs from the Green Alliance and Left, respectively, while Arturo Scotto is a deputy from the Democratic Party, and Marco Croatti is a senator from the 5 Star Movement.
After gathering in the Sicilian port of Portopalo, the fleet will resume its journey together on Friday morning. The Global Sumud Flotilla will continue its journey, aiming to deliver much-needed aid to the people of Gaza.
