Sibling of Sunjay Kapur publishes Raksha Bandhan message, indicating persistent family disagreement
In the wake of the sudden death of Sunjay Kapur, an heir to Sona Comstar, a company valued at approximately ₹30,000 crore, his mother, Rani Kapur, has expressed concerns about the appointments made by the company.
Rani Kapur sent a letter to the board of Sona Comstar in July, alleging that she was coerced into signing key documents while under mental and emotional distress from her son's death. She has contested the board’s decisions, accusing them of coercion, misrepresentation, and an attempt to usurp the family legacy.
Meanwhile, the current head of Sona Comstar is Jeffery Mark Overly, who was appointed as chairman on June 23, 2025, following Sunjay's death. Priya Sachdev Kapur, Sunjay's wife, was appointed as a non-executive director in June 2025 and confirmed by shareholders in July 2025. Vivek Vikram Singh continues to lead the company’s business activities and strategy as Managing Director and Group CEO.
The ongoing succession dispute involves Rani Kapur, as well as Mandhira Kapur, Sunjay's sister. Mandhira admitted that she had not spoken to her brother for the last 4 years due to a "silly sibling squabble" that "escalated to crazy levels due to egos and natural bullishness."
On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Mandhira shared an emotional message on Instagram, expressing a desire for things to be different and better if Sunjay were still alive. The post included a picture of her with Sunjay and their mother Rani Kapur, and mentioned protecting what Sunjay and her father would have wanted, raising speculations about a family feud.
Operational leadership remains with Vivek Vikram Singh, who continues to lead the company’s business activities and strategy. Despite the family disputes, Sona Comstar continues to operate and grow under his leadership.
