Shubman Gill Recognized as Player of the Month for Exceptional Performance in England, Sealing a Historic Series
Shubman Gill, the young and talented Indian cricketer, has made history in the 2025 England Test series, becoming the first batter to score over 250 and 150 in a single Test match and setting multiple records along the way.
Gill's outstanding performance in the series earned him the ICC Player of the Month award for July, which holds significant importance for him as it was given during his first Test series as captain. The award ceremony took place in July.
Gill's record-breaking innings of 269 in the first innings of the second Test at Edgbaston not only surpassed Virat Kohli's 254 to create a new record for the highest individual score by an Indian captain but also became the highest individual score by an Indian in a single Test match.
In the same match, Gill scored 161 in the second innings, taking his combined total to an astounding 430 runs, the highest by an Indian in a single Test. This performance also helped India secure a series win against a strong English side on their home turf.
Throughout the five-match series, Gill finished with a phenomenal average of 75.40, smashing a double hundred and two hundreds. He amassed a total of 754 runs across 10 outings, making him the leading run-scorer of the series and earning the Player of the Series award.
As of August 2025, Gill has accumulated 6000 international runs across formats in 113 matches, with an average of 46.15. In Tests, he has scored 2647 runs in 67 innings with an average of 41.35, including 9 hundreds and 7 fifties. His highest score remains the 269 against England.
Gill's impact on cricket has been profound, demonstrating remarkable consistency and temperament. As a young leader, he has inspired India's batting lineup and delivered match-winning performances. In addition, he has set new performance benchmarks in various formats, becoming the fastest to 2000 ODI runs and holding one of the highest career batting averages in ODIs.
With this record-breaking series and his consistent performances across all formats, Shubman Gill has cemented his place as one of the most promising and impactful cricketers in modern Indian cricket. Notably, Gill is now the only man with four ICC Player of the Month awards. His 269 is now the second-highest aggregate in Test history, behind only Graham Gooch's 456.
