Shrek 5's supposed rollback in release date has been rumored to move it from its current year to 2027.

After a long wait, fans of the Shrek franchise can finally look forward to the release of Shrek 5 in 2027. This will mark the first film in the series since Shrek Ever After, which was released back in 2010.

The delay for Shrek 5 amounts to nearly a full year, as it was originally scheduled for a July 2026 release. Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have confirmed that the primary reason for the delay is strategic scheduling to maximize box office success by avoiding strong competition in late 2026. The new release date for Shrek 5 is set for June 30, 2027.

The delay has also affected the release of Sony's animated sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which now has a revised release date that is within a week of Shrek 5's new date.

In Shrek 5, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will reprise their roles as Shrek, Princess Fiona, and Donkey, respectively. The Donkey character is one of the most beloved in the Shrek series due to his endlessly cheerful nature and comic relief. Interestingly, Dreamworks is also preparing a solo movie for Eddie Murphy's Donkey character, though no release date has been announced for this spin-off.

Shrek 5 will be the first film in the series since Shrek Ever After, and it will be the sixth film in the Shrek series overall. The series, which first debuted in 2001, has been a huge success, spawning a total of six films. In addition to Shrek 5, Dreamworks is also working on a spinoff movie starring Antonio Banderas' Puss in Boots.

While the official statements from Universal and DreamWorks did not specify detailed reasons for the delay, speculation among fans and some commentators includes the theory that the plot had become too predictable due to leaks or early fan guesses, which might have led DreamWorks to rethink or revise the storyline. However, this is an unconfirmed and somewhat anecdotal reason.

The Shrek series has always been known for its humour, heart, and memorable characters, and it's exciting to see the franchise return after a long hiatus. With the delay of Shrek 5 until 2027, fans will have to wait a bit longer, but it promises to be worth it.
