Shrek 5's postponement distances it from Avengers: Doomsday, now positioning it within the domain of another superhero's marsh.
In the world of animated cinema, the much-anticipated Shrek 5 has been making waves, with its release date now set for June 30, 2027. This is the second delay from its originally planned dates, with a previous schedule in December 2026 and before that, July 1, 2026.
The delay appears to be a strategic move to avoid a crowded release window, especially against superhero blockbusters and other animated tentpoles. Universal and DreamWorks Animation want Shrek 5 to have a more optimal box office window without clashing with highly competitive releases such as Marvel’s offerings and Illumination’s films.
Notably, Illumination’s untitled event film has moved up to April 16, 2027, ahead of Shrek 5’s June release, implying Universal is spacing its major animated IPs strategically within 2027.
Shrek 5's release in mid-2027 will arrive after several major superhero movies and key animated franchises' releases, aiming to avoid direct clashes and benefit from a less crowded blockbuster season.
The new release date places Shrek 5 less than a week out from the release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse on June 25, 2027. Meanwhile, the first three Shrek films are available to stream with a Peacock subscription, while the fourth Shrek film can be accessed with an HBO Max subscription.
The legacy sequel, Shrek 5, promises a star-studded cast, with Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy returning as their iconic characters, and Zendaya joining as Shrek and Fiona's now-young adult daughter, Felicia.
The first look at Shrek 5 was released in February 2023, and it was met with some positive responses but also some disappointment. Some fans expressed disappointment with the updated designs for characters like Fiona and Donkey in Shrek 5. However, some people believe that fans are overreacting to the changes in character designs.
In addition, a film centered on Eddie Murphy's Donkey has been greenlit, adding to the excitement for Shrek 5 and its universe. Despite the uproar, the anticipation for Shrek 5 remains high, with fans eagerly waiting for its release in June 2027.
