Shrek 5's official release has been pushed back to June 2027
After a series of delays, the much-anticipated Shrek 5 is set to hit the big screen on June 30, 2027. The new release date marks a return to the franchise after 26 years, following the original 2001 animated hit.
The latest installment in the Shrek series will be preceded by two Puss in Boots spinoffs, and it will open less than a week after Sony's animated movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Interestingly, the release of Shrek 5 was initially planned for summer 2026, but it was pushed back to December 2026 after Minions 3 took the summer slot. However, due to the intense box office battle expected in December, Universal decided to move Shrek 5 to June 2027 to find a less crowded release window.
Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, who have worked on previous Shrek films, will direct Shrek 5. The original voice cast, including Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona respectively, will return for this new adventure. Zendaya has also joined the cast, but specific details about her role have yet to be revealed.
Shrek, the first-ever recipient of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, generated nearly 500 million USD globally. With such a successful track record, fans are eagerly awaiting the return of their beloved characters in Shrek 5.
Universal has had a history of success with summer releases, such as the Despicable Me franchise, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This move to a summer release for Shrek 5 is widely interpreted as a strategic attempt to capitalize on the typically strong summer box office performance for animations, suggesting speculation about leveraging summer successes of past films under these studios.
Despite the delay, no new release date has been provided for Shrek 5 beyond its new date of June 30, 2027. Fans will just have to wait a little longer to find out what adventures await Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona in this long-awaited sequel.
