- Curses! Here we go
Showrunner of the 'One Piece' franchise resigns from position - Showrunner of the "One Piece" animation collaboratively leaving position of duty.
Avast, me hearties! The co-showrunner of the popular Netflix adaptation of "One Piece," Matt Owens (36), has decided to abandon ship, focusing on his mental health instead. In a tearful post on Instagram, Owens declared, “The last six years working on the live-action version of 'One Piece' has been a life-changing journey. A dream come true. But it's been a lot. So, I'm stepping off the Going Merry to take a break and focus on myself and my mental health.”
Warm Wishes at Deck's Edge
In support of their departing colleague, the "One Piece" Instagram story posted a heartfelt message: "You've set us on a course to something truly special." The sentiment reflects the respect the production holds for Owens' decision.
Owens had been sailing the high seas with the series from the outset. With the completion of Season 2, he expressed gratitude towards manga creator Eiichiro Oda, Shueisha, Tomorrow Studios, Netflix, and "the entire cast and crew for your trust, partnership, and hard work."
Raleigh's Rambunctious Reign
Under the creative guidance of Owens, the live-action adaptation of "One Piece" thrived, becoming one of Netflix's unexpected gems. The series follows the audacious optimist pirate Monkey D. Ruffy, played by Inaki Godoy, on his pursuit of the fabled treasure "One Piece," which promises him the title of pirate king.
With the pirate ship "Going Merry," Ruffy gathers an unruly crew, including navigator Nami (Emily Rudd), swordsman Zoro (Mackenyu), sharp-shooter Usopp (Jacob Romero), and cook Sanji (Taz Skylar).
As for his immediate plans, Owens quipped, "For now, I'll take a breath, go to therapy, try to rank up in Marvel Rivals, and come back refreshed for the new adventures that await me."
So who'll continue bestowing leadership at the helm? The future captain of "One Piece" remains a mystery, with Season 2 anticipated to hoist sails to Netflix sometime in 2026. But until then, Joe Tracz remains on board as a co-showrunner and executive producer. We'll set our compass to keep you posted on what lies ahead for this pirate adventure.
