Stanley Cup Finals Hall of Champions

Here's a snapshot of the last decade's champions, with the Panthers and Oilers battling it out for their chance to join the list:

  • 2024: Florida Panthers (Aiming for a repeat!)
  • 2023: Vegas Golden Knights
  • 2022: Colorado Avalanche
  • 2021: Tampa Bay Lightning
  • 2020: Tampa Bay Lightning
  • 2019: St. Louis Blues
  • 2018: Washington Capitals
  • 2017: Pittsburgh Penguins
  • 2016: Pittsburgh Penguins
  • 2015: Chicago Blackhawks

Panthers vs Oilers: Rivalry Renewed

The Panthers are gunning for their third title in three years. They fell short in 2023, losing to Vegas in six games, but they outmaneuvered Edmonton in last year's series, snatching victory in seven games.

The Oilers are out for revenge and are eager to turn the tables around. Before last season, the Oilers last hoisted the Stanley Cup in 1990. This year, they're aiming to break the long drought.

Quick Glimpse at the 2024 Series

  • Game 1: 3-0 Panthers
  • Game 2: 4-1 Panthers
  • Game 3: 4-3 Panthers
  • Game 4: 8-1 Oilers
  • Game 5: 5-3 Oilers
  • Game 6: 5-1 Oilers
  • Game 7: 2-1 Panthers

Stanley Cup Conqueror Amidst Defeat

Last year's thrilling series witnessed an intriguing twist. Connor McDavid, the standout player of the Oilers, still managed to clinch the Conn Smythe Trophy, given to the playoff MVP, despite his team's loss.

McDavid's historic win makes him one of only six players to claim the award while on the losing team. Since Jean-Sebastian Giguere's victory in 2003, this is the second instance of the trophy being granted to a player from the losing team.

Stay Hungry, McDavid!

  • 2025: Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers
  • 2003: Jean-Sebastian Gigurere, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim
  • 1987: Ron Hextall, Philadelphia Flyers
  • 1976: Reggie Leach, Philadelphia Flyers
  • 1968: Glenn Hall, St. Louis Blues
  • 1966: Roger Crozier, Detroit Red Wings

Odds for Stanley Cup Victory

  • Florida Panthers: 106
  • Edmonton Oilers: -126

In the previous season, the final games were held in Florida. This time around, the series begins in Edmonton, giving the Oilers a home-ice advantage. Previously, the two teams met only twice during the regular season, with both matches ending in close victories for the Panthers by a single goal.

Let's not forget that the Oilers lost 3 straight matches to the Panthers, dating back to the nail-biting Seven-Game Finale last year. It's safe to expect a fierce challenge from the Oilers this time around to retaliate against their formidable opponents.

Historic Repeat Matchup

The last time we saw the same two teams square off consecutively in the Stanley Cup Finals was in 1983, in a matchup between the New York Islanders and the Edmonton Oilers. The Islanders secured a 4-0 sweep in their second straight victory, but the Oilers weren't content.

Hot on their heels, the Oilers sought revenge in the following year and ultimately triumphed, winning their second ever Stanley Cup.

We've witnessed similar situations throughout the Stanley Cup era. The Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins matched wits in both 1957 and 1958, as well as 1977 and 1978, with the Habs emerging victorious in all four instances. The Habs also ended the Blues' southern expansion dreams with sweeps in 1968 and 1969 and dominated the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1959 and 1960.

The Leafs, on the other hand, managed to get their revenge against the Detroit Red Wings by claiming back-to-back victories in the 1950s.

One for the Ages

Contrary to past years, the NHL has not witnessed a sweep since 1998, and it appears unlikely that we'll see one this year. A dedicated hockey fan can only hope for a gripping seven-game series and expect to witness at least six matches between the combatants in this thrilling rivalry.
