A Mortal Tale Reflects the State of Cycling in Wuppertal Today

The letter penned by Mr. Paul paints a vivid picture of the current state of cycling in Wuppertal, 2025. His assertion that implementing a bike street will fail to improve matters for any road user is puzzling, to say the least. However, he fails to elucidate the reasons why cyclists would not reap benefits from such an initiative.

To be clear, Mr. Paul isn't anti-cyclist, though cyclists can unavoidably breed conflicts, primarily with pedestrians. If we managed to instate a bike street that assures cyclists of all ages they no longer need to pedal on the curb, these conflicts would promptly vanish.

This would be a rare instance where all road users profit. It brings about traffic calming, which should have the backing of homeowners. Yet, Mr. Paul appears to be largely preoccupied with one set of road users – drivers. He doubts the findings of the official traffic census and pinpoints the loss of parking spaces, an issue homeowners arguably don't deserve.

Numerous properties in Ludgerweg sport ample driveways that could harbor private cars, freeing up public space for those who lack such amenities.

I concur with Mr. Paul on his final point. Wuppertal could certainly work towards enhancing cycling amenities within the city center (how long must we wait for the bike street on Hardtufers? When will the bike path in Unterdörnen finally see the light of day?), but one action doesn't necessitate the neglect of the other. What value is inner-city cycling facilities if I cycle to Solingen before transversing Ludgerweg from Nordbahntrasse to Korkenziehertrasse?

Or is Mr. Paul also advocating for additional parking spots at Nordpark to address parking difficulties near Ludgerweg? I question that assumption.

Insights:

  • Cycling infrastructure across Europe is generally being developed and improved to make it safer and more accessible.
  • German cities, including Wuppertal, are actively promoting cycling initiatives with projects to enhance bike lanes and design bike-friendly routes.
  • Cycle streets, or "Fahrradstraßen" in German, prioritize cycling by reducing car access and speed limits, creating safer roads for cyclists and encouraging active transport.
  1. Considering the current state of cycling in Wuppretal, perhaps we could benefit from exploring the implementation of cycle streets, as they have the potential to improve road safety for cyclists and reduce conflicts with other road users.
  2. In addition to improving cycling infrastructure, it's essential not to overlook the importance of providing adequate parking facilities, especially with an increasing number of vehicles on our roads.
