Shots fired result in fatalities of two individuals
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a family dispute in Vienna-Leopoldstadt resulted in a shooting incident on Vorgartenstraße. The incident claimed the life of a 44-year-old woman and left several others injured, including a 24-year-old daughter who is currently fighting for her life.
The sequence of events suggests that the 44-year-old man, who had a history of police intervention in 2014, first shot at a 26-year-old before turning his weapon on the women present. The 26-year-old, the partner of the daughter, was also injured in the incident.
According to reports, the family had gathered in the apartment in the evening, and the man behaved strangely during this time. The 26-year-old and a neighbour discovered the victims lying on the floor of the man's apartment.
The man fled the scene after the incident and encountered police in the nearby area, allegedly pointing a weapon at them. Despite a restraining order and a weapons ban, the man illegally possessed an old Belgian model gun with a 9 mm caliber.
In a tragic turn, the man was later found dead in his car, likely having shot himself. An autopsy will clarify the circumstances of his death.
The incident has sparked outrage and sympathy from various organisations. Maria Rösslhumer, the chairwoman of StoP, expressed her deepest sympathy to the victims and their families. The association StoP (Neighborhoods Without Partner Violence) and the Women's Ring held a minute of silence for the victims at a press conference. Klaudia Frieben from the Austrian Women's Ring stated that the latest incident once again highlights the urgency of the issue.
The Vienna Children and Youth Welfare Office (MA 11) is offering help to victims of violence. In Austria, the organization responsible for addressing violence against women and providing help and information is the 'Frauenhauskoordinierung e.V.' which supports women's shelters and advisory centers, works to prevent violence against women, and improves support services for abused women and their children. Additionally, local women's shelters like Frauenhaus Amstetten offer protection, housing, and counseling services around the clock.
The incident also involved three minors, including the 15-year-old daughter of the 44-year-old, and a two-year-old who was present in the apartment during the incident.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing and preventing domestic violence. If you or someone you know is a victim of violence, please seek help. Resources are available, and support is out there.
