Background and Victims

The tragic incident occurred on December 6, 2023, at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) campus. The shooter, Anthony Polito, a 67-year-old business professor, had a history of disappointment and financial struggles. Polito was denied tenure due to a lack of published journal articles and faced extensive debt, including rent arrears and outstanding student loans.

Three professors, Patricia Navarro Velez, 39; Jerry Cha-Jan Chang, 64; and Naoko Takemaru, 69, tragically lost their lives in the attack. Daraboth "Bot" Rith, a visiting assistant professor, survived with ten gunshot wounds. Polito, despite having laminated cards believed to be "hit lists" with photos, names, and room numbers of UNLV and East Carolina University professors, did not target any of the shooting victims. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
