Shopkeeper murder verdict handed down for Saran
In the Karaganda region, a 51-year-old local from Saran has been sentenced after a brutal armed robbery of a store and the fatal killing of its owner.
This defendant faced trial for two charges: armed robbery with forced entry (Article 192, Section 3, Paragraph 4) and premeditated murder for financial gain (Article 99, Section 2, Paragraph 8 of the Criminal Code).
The court has imposed a 23-year prison sentence on the culprit, which will be served in a medium-security correctional facility, as Judge Bekzat Shalgymbaev announced. The convict appeared unmoved during the pronouncement of the verdict. Earlier, he made a final plea for forgiveness from the victim’s family and expressed remorse. He requested the court to determine his punishment.
The victim’s brother, Gulstan Tileukhabyly Ertai, shared his thoughts on the verdict mentioning that the family is content with the court's judgement but intends to demand a harsher sentence if the offender appeals.
"If he decides to appeal, we will counter-appeal and push for a tougher punishment, even life imprisonment. Since the beginning of the investigation and the trial, he has displayed a condescending attitude, did not admit guilt, attempted to place blame on someone else, and provoked us. We believed the court would take all these factors into account. But the court gave him a 23-year sentence. We have no confidence that he will reimburse the 20 million tenge. However, at the very least, he won’t be released early," said Ertai Tileukhabyly.
