Shooter fires multiple rounds in a skyscraper in New York City, claiming numerous lives
In a shocking incident that occurred on a busy evening in Manhattan, a gunman opened fire in the lobby of a high-rise office tower, resulting in a tragic loss of life. The building, which houses financial firms like Blackstone and KPMG, as well as the NFL headquarters, was the scene of the shooting.
The suspected motive behind the shooting appears to be linked to the gunman's claimed brain injury and grievances with the NFL. The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane D. Tamura from Las Vegas, left a note attributing his chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)—a brain disease caused by repeated head trauma—to the NFL and requesting his brain be studied.
Tamura, who was a former high school football player, appeared to suffer from CTE, a condition often found in athletes of contact sports. Dressed in body armor and armed with an assault-style rifle, he opened fire randomly on people in the building before taking his own life on the 33rd floor.
The aftermath of the shooting was devastating. Four victims—three civilians and one off-duty New York City police officer working security at the building—were tragically killed. One other individual is critically wounded and fighting for their life. The shooting caused a major emergency response, with the FBI involved, and led to employees of the major firms within the building being instructed to shelter in place.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed five innocent people were shot, including the perpetrator, in addition to the officer. New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the "senseless act of violence" that had killed "four New Yorkers, including one of New York's Finest."
The NYPD officer killed in the shooting was identified as Didarul Islam, a three-and-a-half-year veteran of the department who was born in Bangladesh. Islam, who was married with two young boys, and his wife is pregnant with their third child.
Surveillance video footage shows the shooter exiting a double-parked BMW, carrying an M4 assault rifle. Police found a rifle case, a revolver, magazines, and ammunition in the suspect's car.
The shooting, which occurred around 6:30 p.m. local time during rush hour, has drawn immediate reactions from political figures, including Adams and former President Trump. The frontrunner in the race for New York mayor, Zohran Mamdani, expressed heartbreak over the "horrific shooting."
