Shocking army personnel shift
=======================================================================
In the crowded control point of a military unit in Lutsk, Ukraine, approximately twenty visitors, mostly wives and children, gather around men who have been called up for military service. Among them is Andriy, a pseudonymous soldier who was mobilized nearly two years ago in the Lutsk region.
Each of the women has brought something for her husband to eat, a small comfort in the subdued mood among the men. The current mobilization in Ukraine is unprecedented, with hundreds of thousands of men summoned this summer, many of whom were previously wanted. The age of those called up varies, with many being over 40 years old.
The army in Ukraine needs people of various professions, not just those who handle weapons or operate tanks. Andriy, for example, is engaged in defensive duties such as installing anti-drone nets, a critical role amid ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.
The mood among the men is focused and resolute, despite difficult conditions. Vitalii, another soldier, emphasizes that a ceasefire would help them rest and strengthen defenses, but he is firm that "the Russians will never stop the war" and remains committed to the mission regardless of diplomacy.
However, due to intense fighting and increasing danger, Ukrainian forces have recently been ordered to pull back from certain positions, such as a vital highway in eastern Ukraine. This highlights the precarious situation and pressures faced by mobilized personnel.
The control point, measuring three times six meters, is a bustling hub of activity. The provisions in the military unit are good, but everyone prefers homemade food, a reminder of civilian life. The Research Fund Abroad e.V. provided financial support for this article.
The men waiting for military training have their own unique stories of being taken from construction sites, electric bikes, or farms. After training, soldiers will be assigned a military task and sent to serve in a unit.
In summary, the mobilized men at Lutsk's military point are determined but under strain from ongoing Russian offensive operations. Their mood is one of pragmatic endurance amid a precarious and dangerous front line, with recognition of the need for rest but no illusions about the persistence of the conflict.
