Shivpuri's proposed airport faces wildlife and legal roadblocks near Madhav National Park
Plans for a new airport in Shivpuri have hit early challenges. The proposed site lies within the buffer zone of Madhav National Park, raising concerns from the Forest Department. Officials have yet to receive a formal proposal for the project. The state government aims to upgrade Shivpuri’s existing airstrip into a full airport. The project would require around 250 acres of land. However, its location near Madhav National Park makes forest clearance unlikely.
The Aviation Department has instructed the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to carry out a feasibility study. This assessment follows Supreme Court guidelines on wildlife conservation. The project’s future depends on whether legal obstacles can be avoided.
If the current site proves unworkable, alternative locations are under consideration. Expansion towards the national park is expected to face strong opposition. Park officials have not yet been formally approached with a proposal. The airport’s development remains uncertain due to environmental and legal hurdles. A final decision will depend on the feasibility study’s findings. Until then, the project stays on hold.
