Shiv Sena (UBT) Embraces Rahakrishan's Candidacy; Fadnavis Solicits Multi-Party Cooperation
Shiv Sena (UBT) Endorses NDA's Vice President Candidate, Causing Stir within Maha Vikas Aghadi
In a surprising turn of events, the Shiv Sena (UBT) has endorsed Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) candidate for the Vice President election. This move, though unusual given the MVA alliance's general opposition stance, signals a potential realignment within the coalition.
Radhakrishnan, a senior BJP leader with 40 years of political experience, was announced as the NDA's candidate on August 17, 2025. The NDA, led by the BJP, currently enjoys the backing of at least 422 out of 781 members in the electoral college for the Vice President's election, making Radhakrishnan's victory a foregone conclusion.
The Shiv Sena (UBT)'s endorsement aligns them with the NDA's choice, despite being part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance in Maharashtra. The MVA alliance typically consists of Shiv Sena (UBT), the NCP, and Congress, who often oppose the BJP-led NDA at the state level.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appealed to all MPs from the state to support Radhakrishnan's candidature. Notably, he has reached out to NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray for their support.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has expressed happiness over Radhakrishnan's nomination, but has not confirmed official support from his party. Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), has not officially declared his party's support for Radhakrishnan's candidacy, but his open appreciation has caused unease within the MVA alliance.
The INDIA bloc, to which the Shiv Sena (UBT) belongs in the Parliament, will make decisions collectively regarding Radhakrishnan's candidacy. The situation within the MVA alliance has been affected by the open appreciation of Radhakrishnan's candidacy by Shiv Sena (UBT).
The electoral college for the Vice President's election includes all members of both Houses of Parliament. Radhakrishnan, a registered voter in Mumbai, cast his vote during last year's assembly elections. After his nomination, he left for New Delhi to hold discussions with senior BJP leaders.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar has expressed hope that Uddhav Thackeray will not support the NDA nominee for Vice President, Mr. Radhakrishnan. Over 5.4 lakh hectares of crops have been damaged and 8 people have died due to heavy rains in Maharashtra, but the political drama surrounding the Vice President election seems to overshadow these unfortunate incidents.
This stance by Shiv Sena (UBT) could potentially weaken the coherence of the MVA alliance at the national level and may influence future alliances or power-sharing dynamics in Maharashtra and beyond. The political landscape in Maharashtra continues to evolve as the Vice President election approaches.
