New Green Party Leader Vows to Broaden Appeal and Focus on Authentic Policies
Leonore Gewessler, the newly elected federal spokeswoman of the Green Party, has outlined her plans to rebuild and broaden the party's appeal while remaining true to its core values. Gewessler, who served as the most powerful minister in the previous turquoise-green coalition, responsible for environmental protection, traffic, railways, and energy, was elected in June.
Gewessler aims to pull the Green Party out of its current predicament following Werner Kogler's tenure as party chairman. Kogler led the Greens from the extra-parliamentary opposition bench directly to the government bench after their exit from parliament in 2017.
In her new role, Gewessler has expressed concern about the resistance the Greens face outside cities, particularly due to their approach to cars, climate protection, and perceived "woke" worldview. She plans to address this by advocating for renewable energy and effective climate action, while also focusing on social issues linked to economic fairness and work-life balance.
Gewessler has proposed a three-point plan for increasing childcare places, guaranteeing legal childcare entitlement from age one, and enabling part-time workers who regularly do overtime to raise their contract hours. This aims to broaden the party’s appeal beyond traditional environmental voters by addressing family and labor concerns more inclusively.
On political positioning, after the Greens’ exit from government post-national election and Gewessler’s election as federal spokesperson, the party appears focused on programmatic renewal, regaining clear identity, and broadening their base without compromising core values.
Gewessler also distances herself from purely budget-related criticisms, emphasizing her role strictly in climate policy, indicating a desire to maintain authenticity focused on environmental issues while engaging in broader societal debates constructively.
These elements show Gewessler’s strategy to expand the Green Party’s support by linking environmental sustainability firmly with social justice and work-life fairness, reinforcing policy coherence and party identity to stay authentic.
Gewessler's first opportunity to present herself in her new role will be at the ORF Summer Talk. She gained significant media attention due to her areas of responsibility during the corona crisis. Despite accusations of legal and constitutional violations, the ÖVP did not immediately dissolve the coalition following Gewessler's vote on the EU renaturation contrary to the position of the coalition partner ÖVP in June 2024. The Greens are currently without representation in the Burgenland state government.
