Mountain Guide Kami Rita Sherpa Breaks Record with 31st Mount Everest Ascent
Nepalese mountain guide Kami Rita Sherpa has set a world record by summiting Mount Everest for the 31st time. At 55 years old, Sherpa, who hails from the Himalayan Sherpa community, surpassed his own previous record. The historic climb took place at 4 a.m. on May 27, 2025, as he led a team of Indian climbers down from the 8,849-meter peak.
Born in a family of mountain guides, Sherpa completed his first ascent of Everest at the age of 24 in 1994. Since then, he has successfully scaled the highest peak on Earth nearly every year, earning fame not only in Nepal but globally. Additionally, he has conquered other eight-thousanders in the Himalayas.
Last year, fellow Nepalese climber Pasang Dawa Sherpa reached the summit 29 times, remaining hot on Kami Rita's heels in terms of Everest ascents. Seven Summit, the expedition operator, reported that Pasang Dawa has already climbed the mountain twice during this spring climbing season.
Mount Everest, located on the border between Nepal and China, serves as a busy route for hundreds of foreign climbers each year. With the help of Sherpas and modern equipment, these climbers often achieve their summit dreams. The income generated from the climbers' expenses is essential for Nepal's economy, given that the country is home to eight of the fourteen peaks over 8,000 meters, including Mount Everest.
