Nepali mountain guide Kami Rita Sherpa, known as "Everest Man," ascended Mount Everest for the 31st time on Tuesday, setting a new world record for the most summits of the world's tallest peak. The 55-year-old Sherpa reached the 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) summit via the southeast ridge route, while serving as a guide for a 22-member Indian army team and 27 other Sherpas.

Expedition organizer Seven Summit Treks extended warm congratulations to Sherpa, whose 31 summits now makes him the individual with the highest number of ascents in Everest's history. The company praised Sherpa as a national climbing hero and a global symbol of Mount Everest. As of Tuesday, Sherpa was making his way down to lower camps.

Born to a Sherpa guide, Sherpa first climbed Everest in 1994 and has reached the summit nearly every year since. He has been in competition with another Sherpa, Pasang Dawa, who has made 29 summits. More than 8,000 people have scaled Mount Everest since it was first summited by Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953.

Speaking to AFP in May 2024 after a previous record-breaking climb, Sherpa stated he was not motivated by setting records and saw himself as "just working." He expressed happiness that his climbs help Nepal receive global recognition.
