Shelling detected, smoke seen near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant according to IAEA reports
IAEA Expresses Concern Over Shelling Incident Near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed concern about the ongoing safety and security risks at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, following a shelling incident near the facility on Tuesday.
According to the IAEA, shots were heard near the plant, coinciding with an alleged drone attack on a training center nearby. Multiple artillery shells struck an area outside the plant's perimeter, approximately 400 meters from its off-site diesel fuel storage facility. Black smoke was observed rising from three nearby locations following the incident.
The IAEA Director General, Rafael Grossi, stated that the incident underscored the constant dangers to nuclear safety and security. He reiterated these concerns, stating that the ongoing risks at the plant are a matter of grave concern.
The IAEA team, who were visiting the plant at the time of the incident, did not provide details about the cause of the shelling. No reports of casualties were made in relation to the shelling incident, but there was no information about equipment damage.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant's perimeter remained unaffected by the shelling. However, the incident occurred around the IAEA team's visit to the plant, raising questions about the security measures in place to protect the facility.
The IAEA did not indicate any response or action taken to address the shelling incident. The agency has previously expressed concern about the recurring drone-related threats to nuclear safety in the area.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is the largest nuclear power station in Europe and has been under the control of Russian forces since March 2022. The plant has been a source of tension between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides accusing each other of endangering the facility's safety.
The IAEA has been working to ensure the safety and security of the plant, and has called for all parties to respect the IAEA's access to the plant and to ensure the safety and security of its staff. The agency has also called for the establishment of a nuclear safety and security protection zone around the plant.
The incident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant serves as a reminder of the constant dangers to nuclear safety and security in the region. The IAEA will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with all parties to ensure the safety and security of the plant and the surrounding area.
