In the Last Few Weeks, Russia's Drones Rain Down on Ukraine

Over the past month, Russia has been ramping up its drone assaults on Ukraine, a shift that seems to contradict ongoing peace negotiations. Recently, on June 15, Russian forces unleashed a barrage of missiles and drones, attacking residential areas in Kherson and Donetsk oblasts.

The Kherson Oblast has been a focal point for these attacks. Over the past day, the region has endured drone, artillery, and aerial bombardments. Tragically, these assaults resulted in one fatality and another injury. The Oblast administration also reported damages to homes, apartments, gas pipelines, infrastructure, and other vital facilities.

Similarly, in Donetsk Oblast, two people were injured in Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, as reported by the regional governor, Vadym Filashkin.

The city of Kremenchuk in Poltava Oblast weathered a significant part of these combined missile and drone strikes. Although no injuries or deaths were reported, the attacks did hit energy and agricultural facilities.

In the midst of these attacks, Ukrainian air defense managed to neutralize a staggering 159 out of 183 drones launched by Russia, according to the Air Force's morning update. They also successfully intercepted 2 Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missiles and six out of eight cruise missiles.

Drones were also spotted flying through multiple regions, including Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk oblasts.

This escalation in drone attacks is not a new phenomenon. Since the fall of 2024, Russia has been increasingly relying on drone warfare, with monthly drone attacks exceeding 1,000 in September and 2,000 in October. The number of drone attacks more than tripled from 2024 to 2025, with a monthly average of nearly 3,500 strikes.

One of Russia's largest drone and missile strikes occurred on May 25-26, 2025, while an even larger one took place early June 2025. In these attacks, Ukraine neutralized an impressive percentage of incoming drones and missiles – 479 out of 499 in the early June attack, with 292 shot down and 187 jammed via electronic warfare.

Ukraine has successfully intercepted over 21,000 drones launched by Russia since September 2022. Overall, over 33,000 drones have been launched against Ukraine since then. This escalation in violence, particularly the increased use of drones, has significantly expanded the conflict's complexity and intensity.

As war-and-conflicts continue to escalate, Russia's extensive use of drones has become a hallmark of their military strategy, recently resulting in policy-and-legislation discussions related to crime-and-justice, politics, and general-news. On June 15, Russia unleashed a barrage of missiles and drones, attacking residential areas in Kherson and Donetsk oblasts, leaving fatalities and injuries in their wake.
