Maya Train Accident Investigation Underway as Services Resume

In a shocking turn of events, a collision between two trains near the Izamal station in Yucatán caused the derailment of one carriage on the Maya Train on August 19, as explained by General Óscar David Lozano Águila during President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's morning press conference [1].

Initial victim accounts confirmed that another train entered the path of the Maya Train, causing it to divert and derail [1]. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities, but the event was described as a serious disaster [1]. The authorities activated safety protocols following the accident [2].

General Lozano Águila clarified that the incident was not a derailment, but a "track incident" [3]. He also commended the actions of the conductor "Janeth" following the accident and stated that the Dictaminadora Commission will issue a ruling on the accident and implement security measures to prevent another accident [4].

Despite the incident, 67 passengers chose to continue their journey on the Maya Train after it resumed service [5]. In addition, a woman named Amanda was assisted to prevent a fine of 35,000 pesos after the accident [6].

The investigation into the cause of the accident is still ongoing [7]. Meanwhile, the Field Technification Program aims to produce food with less water and recover around 2,800 million cubic meters of water [8]. The consideration of installing a hydraulic suspension is being considered to prevent a similar situation on the Maya Train [9].

President Sheinbaum began the press conference by stating that it is held to inform the people and address more topics as her term progresses [10]. She also responded to a report that the National Guard was storing stolen fuel by questioning the purpose of the morning press conference and stating that it's not to make accusations of "bad intent."

As part of the Rutas de Salud program, 3,801 medicine kits were delivered to 3,430 health centers [11]. FIFA will determine the broadcaster for the transmission of the 2026 World Cup in Mexico [12].

The press conference concluded with discussions on modifications to the INEGI methodology to adjust poverty reduction data in Mexico and news on gasoline prices [13].
