"Shashi Tharoor Explains Rahul Gandhi's 'Mortuary Economy' Statement"

In a surprising turn of events, Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has endorsed US President Donald Trump's statement that the Indian economy is "dead."

Gandhi, in a series of statements, expressed being "glad" that Trump stated a fact about the Indian economy. He criticized the Modi government’s economic policies, arguing that everyone except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Finance Minister knows the Indian economy is in a dire state.

Gandhi blamed several government actions for this, including demonetisation, a flawed Goods and Services Tax (GST) implementation, the failure of the "Assemble in India" initiative, and the wiping out of MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises) as well as the crushing of farmers. He further accused the government of destroying India’s economy to benefit businessman Gautam Adani and said the government is running the country into the ground, including in areas of economic, defense, and foreign policy.

Gandhi also questioned why Prime Minister Modi had not responded to Trump's critical statements and suggested there was confusion and misplaced control within the government.

By endorsing Trump’s comment, Gandhi sought to highlight what he views as the failures of Modi's administration to manage the economy properly, contrasting with other Congress leaders who defended India's economy against Trump's criticism.

Meanwhile, US President Trump made a 25 percent tariff announcement against India. The announcement was made on his social media platform Truth Social, but no specific fact was mentioned about any impact of the tariffs or the threat of a penalty on the Indian economy.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor refused to comment on Gandhi's endorsement of Trump's "dead economy" remark about India. However, he expressed concern about the importance of the strategic and economic partnership between India and the US. He suggested talking to other regions for exporting Indian goods to make up for potential losses in the US.

Tharoor also supported Indian negotiators in their efforts, urging strength to get a fair deal in their negotiations. Interestingly, no specific response or comment was made from the BJP regarding Gandhi's statements.

As the economic situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the Indian government will respond to these criticisms and the potential impact of the US tariffs on the Indian economy.
