Shane MacGowan's wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, reveals the demise of her sister, who was also her closest companion, approximately two years following the death of MacGowan.
In a tragic turn of events, Shane MacGowan's wife, Vanessa, passed away on Friday night at the age of 59. The cause of her death has not been officially confirmed, but reports suggest it was due to insurance issues. Shane, the iconic Irish singer known for his work with The Pogues, had been battling health insurance for several years.
Vanessa's death has left a profound impact on those close to her, including her sister, Victoria Mary Clarke, who described Vanessa as her best friend. Victoria met her future husband, Shane, when she was just 16 years old at the Royal Oak pub in North London in December 1982. The couple began dating in 1986 and, after years of a complex relationship marked by infidelity, they finally tied the knot in 2018. They celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary just days before Shane's death.
Victoria, an Irish journalist and writer, penned a heartfelt tribute to Vanessa, describing her as kind, compassionate, selfless, caring, beautiful, the best and the brightest, and interested in everything. She also mentioned that despite their years of health insurance issues, Vanessa's death from pneumonia still came as a shock.
The news of Vanessa's passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences from fans and fellow musicians. Irish singer Imelda May offered her sympathies to Victoria and her family, while another fan expressed their grief on social media.
Victoria posted a photo of Vanessa with Shane on social media, accompanied by a moving tribute. She wrote, "I couldn't have asked for a better partner in life, a more loving and caring relationship tips, or a more beautiful soul. You were the missing piece of my life when we first met, and I will forever cherish the time we spent together."
Despite the ups and downs in their relationship, Victoria and Shane were unable to hold grudges due to their deep love for each other. They maintained an 'unglamorous' side to their relationship, often finding humour in their hospital visits.
Shane's health had been declining for several years, and his death from pneumonia still came as a shock to Victoria. The couple did not act as though he was dying, and they had a bit of fun in the hospital.
Vanessa's passing has left a void in Shane's life, but her memory will live on through the love and admiration of those who knew her.
