Shane MacGowan's wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, declares the demise of her sister, who was also her closest friend, two years following MacGowan's death.
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Vanessa MacGowan, sister of the legendary Irish musician Shane MacGowan, on Friday night. The news was shared on social media by Victoria Mary Clarke, who described her sister as her 'best friend'.
Vanessa, an Irish journalist and writer, was 59 years old at the time of her death. She was known for her selfless, caring, kind, compassionate, and intelligent nature. Her life touched many, and her loss is deeply felt by those who knew her.
Vanessa and Shane MacGowan's relationship spanned decades, with their love story beginning in 1986. Victoria Mary Clarke, who is now Victoria, first met her husband, Shane, when she was 16 years old at the Royal Oak pub in North London in December 1982. Despite being unfaithful to each other, they loved each other completely and utterly, and were 'unable to hold grudges' due to their 'pure, unconditional love' for one another.
The couple married in 2018 and celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary just days before Shane's death in November 2023, following a long battle with pneumonia. Shane's death came as a shock to Victoria, even after years of declining health.
Vanessa's passing has led to an outpouring of support from friends, family, and fans. Irish singer Imelda May was one of the first to offer condolences to Victoria Mary Clarke. Another fan expressed sympathy and sent love to Victoria and her family.
Vanessa was interested in many things and looked after those around her. Her life, much like her relationship with Shane, was filled with love and care. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Our thoughts are with Victoria and the MacGowan family during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Vanessa.
