Golfing Giant Shane Lowry refreshes Oakmont for US Open

Step aside, Oakmont Country Club, Shane Lowry is coming for the trophy! This dynamic golfer, known for his infectious energy and unyielding spirit, has been causing quite a stir on the PGA Tour.

Lowry's only missing piece? Consistently crossing the finish line in first. Despite his three victories since joining the tour in 2015-16—the last one a triumphant win at the Zurich Classic alongside buddy Rory McIlroy—the Irish champ yearns for more.

His greatest triumph came at the 148th Open, an extraordinary victory at Royal Portrush in 2019. Now, as the 2022 US Open approaches, Oakmont has Lowry among its betting favorites, making this weekend a game-changer for the Irishman.

Recent weeks have seen Lowry suffer some near-misses, ending as runner-up at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and T2 at the Truist Championship. Yet, despite these close shaves, Lowry remains unbowed.

"People may say 'you're having a great year', but there's one thing missing," he confided to the Irish Times. "I don't want to win every tournament, just one or two."

As Oakmont readies itself, Lowry is candid about his frustration over falling short in recent times. "I think it's the best I've ever been," he sighed, "but I don't feel like I'm getting rewards." The Irishman's resounding competitiveness shines through as he bravely fights for that elusive major championship victory.

Although the last US Open at Oakmont saw disappointment for Lowry, who fell three shots short of eventual winner Dustin Johnson in 2016, he sees that experience as an invaluable learning opportunity.

"If I hadn't experienced that (2016 US Open), would I have done what I did at Portrush in 2019? I wouldn't trade it for anything," he told the Irish Times. "I think I learned a lot from that day, and it stood to me over the last nine years."

With a hopeful gaze towards this week's proceedings, Lowry aims to make Oakmont his stage for Major glory. As he tees off, it's clear that Shane is not just playing to win; he's playing for history.
