Shakespearean Comedy Makes a Return to Danville, Infused with a Fresh Historical Perspective

In the heart of Danville, California, the SPARC Theater is set to present a unique and captivating production of Shakespeare's classic comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Titled Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor, this production offers a fresh interpretation, setting the play just after the American Civil War.

The comedic story revolves around Sir John Falstaff's attempts to woo two married women for financial gain, only to be outwitted by them through clever pranks and resistance. This reimagining not only preserves Shakespeare’s original language and humor but also enriches the themes of power, pride, and community by setting the play in a historically significant context.

The performances will take place at the Village Theatre and Art Gallery, a historic venue that has been a part of Danville's landscape since 1913. Located at 233 Front St. in downtown Danville, the theatre is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a party organised by the city.

The production runs from August 8 through August 24, with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. For those with young children, a special matinee performance is scheduled for August 17. Tickets and more information can be found on the Danville city website or by contacting John Dunn at [email protected] or 925-314-3418.
