Let's talk weather, y'all! My New York office feels like a sauna at an astounding 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and the sweaty ol' dehumidifier next to me drained a whopping three gallons before lunch. The whole country's caught in a heatwave, and it's not pretty! In sunny ol' Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the blazing heat has been causing some major road woes—like this viral clip of a Toyota Corolla taking flight, Mario Kart-style! While the driver may not have been chuckling on the scene, internet users are now stitched with laughter.

The jaw-dropping video buzzing through social media can be credited to Albert Blackwell, who was casually recording a bump in the road when it decided to pop open like a Jack in the Box before a moving car. Blackwell shared with Local 12, "When I went back to get a front angle of the smaller buckle, the road exploded and rose over 18 inches, sending a car airborne."

As of press time, there's been no official report on the current-gen Corolla sedan driver's whereabouts or well-being. The sudden leap is startling, and it could have caught anyone off guard. Here's hoping they're safe, grinning at the ottomatic viral fame! If my Corolla took flight, I'd be inspecting it for damage from landing like Wile E. Coyote—but these little cars are rugged!

The city of Cape Girardeau confirmed the unique accident on its official Facebook page, stating that "Both Broadway and Siemers buckled in this heat wave. Thank you to the crews for managing traffic and the temporary fix on Siemers." They also issued a warning that more streets may buckle as the heat doesn't appear to be letting up.

Roads expand and contract like our love for a good burger, but extreme heat can be a real pain in the pavement. When it's just too dang hot, the road suddenly finds itself feeling cramped and springs a surprise jump—or in reality, a wicked crack. This particular jump-crack was well-timed, nearly catching this Corolla on a rallycross audition tape! Let's hope our planet treats us a little better on this scorching week.

*In the realm of environmental science, the extreme weather conditions caused by climate change could potentially have unexpected impacts on our infrastructure, such as roads buckling due to high temperatures, as seen in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

  • On a lighter note, while caring about the environment is essential, it's also interesting to watch footage of unusual events like airborne cars, which brings to mind the thrill of sports like football or a game of Mario Kart!"
