A Night of Wild Weather: Ulm under Siege

In the southeastern Baden-Württemberg region, a stormy night unfolded, with Ulm bearing the brunt of it all. A ferocious thunderstorm pounded the city, moving on toward Bavaria after.

The storm left several homes in shambles. The hardest hit was the Donaustetten neighborhood, where numerous row houses lost their roofs, rendering them uninhabitable. Adrian Röhrle, the head of the Ulm fire department, reported this in the evening, assuring that fortunately, no injuries were recorded.

The Wind, a Whirlwind, or a Tornado?

Speculation abounds regarding the force behind the destruction. The fire department suspects a "small whirlwind" that swept through a couple of streets, leaving a trail of devastation. Within a kilometer radius, properties suffered significant damage - some just saw a few tiles blown off while others lost entire roofs. One resident reported total car damage.

Yet, the German Weather Service (DWD) is looking into a possible tornado, stating they'll present their findings on Thursday.

The DWD had issued a warning for heavy thunderstorms, hurricane-force winds, hail, and heavy rain across the government districts of Stuttgart, Freiburg, and Tübingen. The warning was rescinded late in the evening.

A Tree's Wrath

A grim warning was issued by the DWD earlier: citizens should brace for "danger from lightning strikes, hail, or heavy storm gusts." Flooding and severe traffic disruptions were also anticipated. The risk of injury or death from falling trees, electricity lines, scaffolding, large objects, and falling branches or tiles was high.

Potential Hailstorm Chaos

The DWD predicted localized hail and heavy rain in the afternoon. In areas such as Ostalb and Allgäu, giant hailstones up to eight centimeters in diameter and hurricane gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour were predicted. These large hailstones can fall at speeds of 140 kilometers per hour, posing a significant impact risk. If people or animals remain exposed, the danger of injury is high. Hail can also cause damage to roofs or harm crops.

Fire from a Lightning Strike

Rain poured in many parts of Baden-Württemberg throughout the day. Thunderstorms and shower-like rain were common in numerous places in the morning.

A house in Bad Liebenzell (district of Calw) caught fire due to a lightning strike during a thunderstorm. A firefighter was injured while battling the blaze, police reported. The house remains habitable, though damage is estimated at approximately 150,000 euros.

Residents heard the smoke alarm and subsequently discovered smoke in the attic. The building was disconnected from the power grid, and a scorched line in the attic was discovered.

Economic and social policy response to the destruction caused by the wild weather could involve aid for affected residents, such as housing assistance for those rendered homeless, infrastructure repair, and provisions for damaged properties.

Considering the current suspicion of a possible tornado, an accurate weather-forecasting system in collaboration with the German Weather Service (DWD) is crucial to prevent future catastrophes and minimize damage.
