Destructive Storms and Hail: More Than €1 Billion in Car Weather Damage in Germany

Devastating Weather Events: 1.3 Billion Dollars Worth of Car Damage Due to Hail and Storms - Severe weather with thunderstorms and hailstorms caused approximately $1.3 billion worth of vehicle damage.

Last year, insurance companies shelled out a whopping €1.3 billion for car damages induced by storms. A staggering 340,000 vehicles ended up in the scrap heap or with hefty dents, scratches, and even toppled trees. But this figure might be even higher, as only comprehensive insurance coverage offers payouts for weather-related vehicle damage, and liability insurance — the only legally required coverage — only compensates for damages caused by drivers to other people's property.

Southern Germany experienced the brunt of the devastation, as weather damages to comprehensively insured vehicles were overwhelmingly regional. "Leading" the pack was Baden-Württemberg, with 133,500 vehicles suffering damage. The southwestern state accounted for over a third of all automobile weather-related damages, costing insurers a colossal €530 million. Bavaria followed closely behind with 65,000 affected vehicles, each inflicting an average expense of €4,300.

Despite 2024 being considered an average year, the German Insurance Association (GDV) CEO Jörg Asmussen points out that storm cells and hailstorms have been growing stronger in recent years. The GDV also indicates that the frequency and intensity of severe weather events — particularly in southern regions such as Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg — are on the rise, suggesting a persistent problem for insurers and motorists alike.

According to the GDV’s comprehensive analysis, natural disasters like heavy storms and hail have triggered substantial losses in the auto insurance sector, often exceeding €1 billion annually. As these catastrophic weather events become more frequent and intense due to climate change, car owners and insurers might face a continuous challenge in managing the rising costs associated with storm and hail damage.

  • The German Insurance Association (GDV) has warned that car owners and insurers might be facing a continuous challenge as natural disasters like heavy storms and hail, often exceeding €1 billion in annual losses, are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change.
  • To combat this issue and facilitate recovery after such disasters, it could be beneficial for the community to implement a policy that encourages or subsidizes vocational training in environmental-science and weather analysis, thereby providing skilled professionals who can help predict and mitigate destructive weather events in the future.
